Paula
Gulak was a founding partner of SyCom Technologies, an information
systems solution company which focuses on the design, implementation,
management, service and support of multivendor, multiplatform network
systems. Paula's primary areas of responsibility with the company are
Marketing, Public Relations and Business Development. Prior to founding
SyCom Technologies in April 1996, positions held within the technology
sector include Director of Marketing/Northeastern US, AmeriData,
1995-1996; Director of Marketing for The Whitlock Group 1989-1995;
Account Manager and Marketing Director, Dardick, 1982-1989.
Paula is former President and Chair of the Greater Richmond Technology
Council, has served on the Executive Committee of the Better Business
Bureau of Central Virginia and Chairperson of the BBB Torch Awards for
Business Integrity. In 1998, she was appointed as one of 32 statewide
business leaders to Governor Jim Gilmore's Commission on Information
Technology. She was appointed by Governor Mark Warner to the Innovative
Technology Authority and Center of Innovative Technology and is Vice
Chair of the CIT Board. She also serves on the Chamber of Commerce
Foundation Board and the Virginia BioTech Park Board. Additional
activities have included the Board of AFS, Federated Arts Council and
Parents Advisory Committee for Talented and Gifted Students/City of
Richmond Public Schools.
SyCom Technologies has been the recipient of numerous business and
industry awards including E&Y's Entrepreneur of the Year / State of
Virginia; BBB Award for Marketplace Integrity, GRTC Award for IT
Builder, Rising 25 and Virginia's Fantastic 50. Paula was awarded GRTC's
Leadership Award in 2003. In 2007, SyCom was chosen one the 15 Best
Places to Work in the Richmond Region by Richmond Magazine.
Paula is married to Dr. Morton Gulak, Architect/Urban Designer and
Chairman of Urban Studies and Planning at Virginia Commonwealth
University. They have a son, Loren and a daughter, Misha. A native of
Florida, Paula received her BA degree from the University of South
Florida in English and Journalism.
