April 2008 Good Morning Technology! Breakfast Series

The Good Morning, Technology! breakfast will be this Thursday, April 17, featuring George Boatright, Director of Information Technology for Media General. The media industry – particularly the newspaper business – faces technology challenges daily as they work to maintain market share in an increasingly competitive landscape. Mr. Boatright’s presentation will cover Media General’s history, and talk about the current challenges and opportunities the company faces as they work to put out daily newspapers and maximize their on-line media presence. He will also detail the lessons learned from last year’s Hanover production plant fire.

Peak 10 is a Greater Richmond Technology Council Business Partner – one of the companies that gives substantial resources to the GRTC in support of the Council’s mission to ensure the continued growth of the highly dynamic technology economy in central Virginia.

During the past few years, Peak 10 Richmond (formerly bayMountain) sponsored and participated in several GRTC events, including the breakfast series and TechSummits. “We felt that unifying all of these efforts under the Business Partner banner was the logical next step,” says Rob Fichter, Sr. Account Executive for Peak 10 in Richmond. “We have a long-term commitment to seeing Council continue to grow, and increased our participation to help make that happen.”
One of  nine data centers the company has strategically placed throughout the southeast and Midwest, Peak 10 Richmond shares the company’s local focus in each of the nine markets it serves. “We primarily see our GRTC membership as an opportunity to be part of a community of like-minded companies using technology to build strong businesses in Richmond,” says Fichter.  Read more . . .

2008 Technology Internship Program

The 2008 Virginia Technology Internship Program is coming together fast – we’re looking for companies interested in offering paid internships to some of the best and the brightest rising seniors from local high schools. The mentor companies that participated in the 2006 and 2007 programs have been unanimously positive about their experience with their interns, and we’re looking to make 2008 the first year that we place every interested student in an internship.

The Council is partnering with Genworth Financial and VirginiaFIRST to offer students the opportunity to apply knowledge and skills learned in their IT-related courses, working in a business environment as they discover the potential rewards of pursuing technology-related degrees and careers. Mentor companies have the opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to the lives of their interns, and to have a real impact on workforce development in central Virginia.

If you participate, you will be able to review the student resumes and select your preferred candidates. To become a mentor, please complete this form and fax to Barb Jones at (804) 622-7766.

For more information contact the Council (804) 379-1177, Barb Jones (804) 662-2700, or Bill Ginther (804) 864-8827.

  SPIN/Business in Motion

The GRTC is partnering with the Greater Richmond Chamber again this year to help present the Chamber’s annual trade fair: SPIN/Business in Motion (formerly known as BizLinc).
In addition to the brand-refresh, SPIN will move to the Richmond International Raceway complex.
Save the date: Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2008. SPIN will offer exhibit booths, some great programs, and the chance to network with people from every business sector in central Virginia.

If you’d to exhibit @ SPIN, or would like more information, contact Casey Quinlan via phone (467-5716) or email (casey@mightycasey.com ).
