March 2008 Good Morning Technology! Breakfast Series

The next Good Morning, Technology! breakfast on Thursday, April 17 , will feature George Boatright, Director of Information Technology for Media General. The media industry – particularly the newspaper business – faces technology challenges daily as they work to maintain market share in an increasingly competitive landscape. Mr. Boatright’s presentation will cover Media General’s history, and talk about the current challenges and opportunities the company faces as they work to put out daily newspapers and maximize their on-line media presence. He will also detail the lessons learned from last year’s Hanover production plant fire.

George is a native Virginian – he grew up in Lynchburg, graduated from William and Mary with a BBA degree in accounting, earned an MBA from the University of Richmond, and is a Certified Public Accountant. He left bean-counting behind in 1999, moving into the world of IT, and currently serves as the Director of Information Technology for Media General, leading IT initiatives throughout the company.

Join us on Friday, April 17 for insider insights into the impact of technology on the media industry. The April breakfast is sponsored by CXI, offering the perfect combination of astute leadership, technical know-how, and state of the art infrastructure to help you achieve your goals. CXI provides ERP, professional services, and functional sourcing consulting, as well as IT staffing solutions. CXI: advanced solutions for a changing world.

2008 Technology Internship Program

The 2008 Virginia Technology Internship Program is ramping up – we’re looking for companies interested in offering paid internships to some of the best and the brightest rising seniors from local high schools. The mentor companies that participated in the 2006 and 2007 programs have been unanimously positive about their experience with their interns, and we’re looking to make 2008 the first year that we place every interested student in an internship.

The Council is partnering with Genworth Financial and VirginiaFIRST to offer students the opportunity to apply knowledge and skills learned in their IT-related courses, working in a business environment as they discover the potential rewards of pursuing technology-related degrees and careers. Mentor companies have the opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to the lives of their interns, and to have a real impact on workforce development in central Virginia.

If you participate, you will be able to review the student resumes and select your preferred candidates. To become a mentor, please complete this form and fax to Barb Jones at (804) 622-7766.

For more information contact the Council (804) 379-1177, Barb Jones (804) 662-2700, or Bill Ginther (804) 864-8827.
