Mapping Campaign Finance | |||
|
The non-partisan Virginia Public Access Project (VPAP) has a new on-line tool for following the money in Virginia politics. The funding map – which can be found at VPAP.org – shades each Virginia county and city according to the total dollar amount of money received by a candidate for statewide office. Visitors click on a locality and view a complete list of donors from that community. “At a glance, voters can see where each of the three candidates for governor got money to fund their campaigns,” said VPAP executive director David M. Poole. “We’ve taken columns of numbers and transformed them into images that make sense to everyday voters.” VPAP, a non-profit group based in Richmond, has enhanced public disclosure of campaign finance information since 1997. VPAP provides free, public access to a listing of campaign contributions that can be sorted by donor name, occupation, locality and zip code. VPAP.org is a valuable tool for anyone with an interest in Virginia government. Government affairs professionals use the information in a variety of ways, such as examining relationships between government officials and groups seeking to influence the outcome of legislation and regulations. To create the new Money Map, VPAP employed sophisticated software to pinpoint the geographic location of each single donor in its database. The result is a series of images that reveal geographic patterns and trends. The Money Map, linked directly to VPAP’s database, and will be instantly revised every time candidates release donor names. The Virginia Public Access Project was founded with the support of a consortium of Virginia newspapers, and has since broadened its financial base to also include interested parties of all kinds that favor disclosure and easy access to campaign information. “The public is far better informed about the critical matter of money in campaigns than ever before, entirely due to VPAP’s efforts,” said Dr. Larry Sabato, a political scientist from the University of Virginia. |
