Capturing Jobs and Investment in an Uncertain Economy

When

June 13, 2008

Who

Growing a regional economy in an economic downturn is a challenge. When established businesses are seeing lean times, what are the prospects for job creation? How does a region spur investment when money’s tight? Greg Wingfield, President & CEO of the Greater Richmond Partnership (GRPVA), works to answer these questions daily as he promotes the Richmond economy and business climate to businesses across the country, and the world. He will share his insights with the Greater Richmond Technology Council (GRTC) at its monthly breakfast on Friday, June 13, 2008, 7:30-9:00am, at The Place at Innsbrook.

Richmond has continued to rise in the last decade on both the Forbes & Fortune lists of business-friendly cities, and has attracted Fortune 500 companies like MeadWestvaco and Altria to the area. In an economic slow-down, will that trend continue? What are the prospects for business growth and job creation? The tech sector in Richmond has been a key piece of the area’s economic development, and will turn out in force to hear Mr. Wingfield’s perspective on both short-term and long-term growth in the region.

Gregory H. Wingfield has committed his career to recruiting and retaining businesses and developing opportunities for the vitality of a region. Specifically, the past 14 years he has been promoting Greater Richmond serving as the first elected president and chief executive officer of the Greater Richmond Partnership, Inc., a public-private regional economic development organization.

Since launching in mid-1994, the Partnership has assisted numerous high profile companies including, Qimonda Richmond, Genworth, Brink’s, Philip Morris USA (headquarters and research/development), MeadWestvaco and Altria Group Inc. The more than 360 businesses recruited since 1994 have committed more than $6.2 billion in new investment. The region has also added more than 124,000 net new jobs over this same period of time.

Organizations that Greg Wingfield has led since 1987 have been named one of the “Best Economic Development Groups in the United States” seven times by Site Selection Magazine. Additionally, the Greater Richmond Partnership has been cited by the magazine three times for pulling off the nation’s biggest “top dollar projects.”

Since Wingfield began his career in 1976, he has assisted over 575 companies that have invested more than $7.6 billion in new capital investment in the Commonwealth.

Mr. Boatright is a native Virginian – he grew up in Lynchburg, graduated from William and Mary with a BBA degree in accounting, earned an MBA from the University of Richmond, and is a Certified Public Accountant. George left bean-counting behind in 1999, moving into the world of IT, and currently serves as the Director of Information Technology for Media General, leading IT initiatives throughout the company.

The Greater Richmond Technology Council (GRTC) is invited to watched high school teams go head-to-head in the annual F.I.R.S.T. (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition at VCU’s Siegel Center on Friday, March 7, 2008, during the monthly GRTC Good Morning Technology breakfast. The 9th Annual Richmond Regional F.I.R.S.T. Competition, an event that draws student competitors from over 60 schools in seven states, the District of Columbia and Canada, is also an annual event for the GRTC – many of its members are sponsors of F.I.R.S.T teams. GRTC members and their guests had the chance to observe the action from the competition floor, where robots are put through their paces in a series of challenging matches, or from the pits, where students work feverishly to fine-tune their machines before and during the competition.

Ford & Microsoft Present Innovations in Transportation

Who

For our February Breakfast, the Council is pleased to have Aneesh Chopra, Secretary of Technology for the Commonwealth of Virginia as moderator for a discussion on “Technology Innovations in Transportation”.

Joining the discussion will be Jim Buczkowski, (left) Director, Electrical Systems Engineering, FORD Motor Company and Larry Williams,  (right)President and CEO, Roadside Telematics Corporation.

Mr. Bucskowski will talk about “Innovation in the Car.” He’ll profile Ford’s exclusive hands-free, voice-activated communications system, Sync. Developed in conjunction with Microsoft, Sync allows drivers to make calls on their Bluetooth-enabled phones, select and play music from their MP3 players, and receive voice-translated text messages, all by way of voice activation. This makes it easier for drivers to keep their hands on the wheel and their eyes on the road. Mr. Bucskowski will also share information on Travel Link, the next generation of navigation systems being introduced in the Ford line.

A Ford Fusion equipped with Sync will be on display outside the meeting. A Sync specialist will be available for hands-on demonstrations for attendees and media following the program.

Along with Mr. Bucskowski, Larry Williams will address “Innovation in Solutions for Transportation.” He will share information on a new system that can assist police, fire, and EMS personnel in notifying drivers’ emergency contacts in case of an accident. It will save valuable time and provide, in some cases, life-saving information.
