Intern News
The Chesterfield Technology Center's RFP project was a huge success
again this year. The students learned a great deal as they went through
the process of completing this project and presenting their proposals to
our panel of 12 professionals.
This project has grown bigger and better each year. Thanks especially to
Lee McDaniel and Mike Webb at ODEC for sponsoring the grand prize of
tickets to the Greater Richmond Technology Council's Gala for the
winning team for the second year in a row. Check on the attached article
related to how the students prepared for this special occasion.
Your investment in the lives of these students makes a
difference...thank you!

about us |
|
The Virginia Technology Internship Program allows
Virginia-area businesses and schools to give back to our community
by fostering growth and development opportunities for focused high
school students interested in pursing a college degree in
technology.
During an 8-week paid summer internship, students will be partnered
with a business assignment leader who will not only instruct them on
projects, processes and technology, but who will also mentor them on
how to work, interact and be successful in technology in a
professional environment. Within the Virginia area we are able to
create collaborative relationships to meet the educational needs of
the students, and help to build ongoing professional partnerships
with our local businesses and our future leading technologists.
Program History
The Virginia Technology Internship Program
successfully completed its pilot during the summer of 2006. Around
30 participants were placed in Richmond area businesses and
successfully completed the summer internship. First year
participating companies included Cap Tech, Northrop Grumman,
Computer Resource, Sycom, Media General, EMC, Science Museum of
Virginia, Genworth Financial, Dominion Resources and Ukrops.

School Participation
We
ask our educational partners to provide technology courses to your
students and help your students learn about the Virginia Technology
Internship Program. It is not required, but some of the
participating schools have chosen to use the internship as an actual
course, using regular evaluations and timecards to grade the
participating students. If your school would like to initiate a
similar program, businesses and mentors will be happy to facilitate.

Off-Site Mock Interviews--CTC Cisco Networking Academy “kicks it up a
notch!”
On
Friday, March 6, second-year Cisco Networking Academy students
participated in off-site mock interviews. Mark Farnsworth of Timmons
Group and his assistant, Lauren Grey, sponsored this event at their
Boulders headquarters in Midlothian. Several IT professionals who
currently serve on our CTC Cisco Networking Acadmey advisory board
served as the interviewers. Interviewers included Mark Farnsworth and
Katie Snidow of Timmons Group; Charlie Stembridge of Kings Dominion;
Jason Howze of Best Buy/Geek Squad; and Jennifer Brown of VACO
Technologies. Students completed employment applications and were then
sent to several meeting rooms and offices to be interviewed. Students
have typically experienced on-site mock interviews; but this was much
more realistic. “It was great to have an interview with an experienced
IT professional, and it has given me an advantage over other students
never having this opportunity!” said Nathan Glomb, a CTC Cisco
Networking student. Though the trip to Timmons was a “quiet ride,” the
ride home was a “triumphant one” and well worth the preparation and
anticipation!
